Bananas have been a popular subject in modern art due to their easily recognizable shape and bright yellow color, making them a common symbol of pop culture. The most famous example of a banana in modern art is Andy Warhol's "The Velvet Underground & Nico" album cover, featuring a yellow banana sticker that could be peeled off to reveal a pink fruit underneath.

In 2019, Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan's artwork titled "Comedian" made headlines when he duct-taped a banana to a wall at Art Basel Miami and sold it for $120,000.

Other artists have also used bananas in their works, such as Japanese artist Takashi Murakami who created a sculpture of a banana with a smiling face, and Brazilian artist Vik Muniz who used banana peel to create portraits.

In the 1960s, Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers created a series of works that featured bananas as a commentary on the art world's commercialization and commodification of art.

Bananas have been used in political art as well, such as in the work of Cuban-American artist Coco Fusco who created a performance piece titled "The Couple in the Cage," which critiqued the display of indigenous people as exotic objects in museums.

Bananas have been used as a symbol of sexuality in the work of British artist Sarah Lucas, who created sculptures of bananas alongside other phallic objects.
